Over 100 years ago, basketball was invented in Springfield, MA. Sixty years ago, this is also where the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame was born. This hall has over 400 inductees and is best known for its annual Enshrinement Ceremony that honors the professional players. It also conducts over seventy high school and collegiate competitions both domestically and internationally. This is an independent, nonprofit organization that promotes, celebrates, and maintains the game of basketball for everyone.

There was a competition to decide the obverse design of the coin. The winning design is by Justin Kunz. He is from the US Mint Artistic Infusion Program (AIP). This design is meant to highlight the strenuous game of basketball in addition to the diversity of the athletes in this sport. There are three players reaching for the basketball over their heads. The background and the border together make up a subtle design of a basketball hoop. The net is in the background and the border of the coin serves as the rim, giving this coin the effect of a ‘slam dunk’ about to happen.

The reverse design is by AIP designer Donna Weaver. It displays a basketball mere seconds before it falls into a hoop. Inscriptions surround the ball.
