Springfield, MA is known for being the birthplace of basketball. To honor this, The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame was also established here sixty years ago. This hall has over 400 inductees and is best known for its annual Enshrinement Ceremony that honors elite players. This independent, nonprofit organization also conducts over seventy high school and collegiate competitions both domestically and internationally. It promotes, celebrates, and maintains the game of basketball for everyone regardless of their background.

The obverse design of the coin was decided from a public competition. The winning designer, Justin Kunz, is from the US Mint Artistic Infusion Program (AIP). This design is meant to showcase how strenuous basketball is in addition to the diversity of the athletes who play this sport. There are three players reaching for the basketball over their heads. The background and the border together make up a subtle design of a basketball hoop. Mixed together with the foreground design, this foreshadows the players about to score.

The reverse design is by AIP designer Donna Weaver. It displays a basketball mere moments before it falls into a hoop. Inscriptions surround the ball.
