The obverse design was created by Justin Kunz, an artist from the US Mint Artistic Infusion Program (AIP). The obverse image represents two main factors to the game of basketball: the diversity of the athletes for this game, and the intensity of the sport. Three players reach for a basketball soaring overhead. The background makes up a subtle basketball hoop with the border serving as the rim. When pairing the foreground and background together, the combined illustration suggests the players are about to score.

The reverse was created by AIP artist Donna Weaver. It showcases a basketball about to fall through a hoop. Inscriptions featured on the coin mark the face value, country, artist initials, and “E PLURIBUS UNUM”.
