The US hadn’t seen the production of bullion coins since FDR outlawed private ownership during the Great Depression, until 1986. That year, the American Eagle Series was released to the public in silver and gold. These classic coins were well-received back then, and their popularity continues today.
The obverse of this coin continues to carry the original 1916 “Walking Liberty” by Adolph A. Weinman. Weinman’s design was used for the early 1900s American silver half dollars. In the picture, Lady Liberty strides to the left side of the American Silver Eagles. Her right arm reaches towards the rising sun and the American flag ripples behind her. Her left arm carries olive and oak branches.
The reverse of the American silver dollars continues to carry the John Mercanti US National Coat of Arms. The bald eagle has its wings stretched wide, and it holds arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other. Hanging from its beak is a banner which reads “E PLURIBUS UNUM”. The shield on the eagle’s chest emblazons the US flag. Lastly, thirteen stars lie above the eagle’s head to honor the original thirteen colonies.
