The Royal Arms Series by The British Royal Mint began in 2019 to exemplify the royal heritage of the monarchy through the ages. The Royal Coat of Arms of the United Kingdom dates back to ancient times and symbolizes authority and military might. Utilized by the ruling British monarch, the Coat of Arms underwent various changes throughout the years. The Royal Coat of Arms shown on this coin first appeared on the currency in the 14th century, and it is now used by Her Royal Highness, Queen Elizabeth II. Coin designer Eric Sewell designed the British Royal Arms configuration, and he was reinterpreted on the 2019 mint by Timothy Noad. This is the 2020 edition, still honoring Sewell’s design. 

The obverse of the coin displays the regal effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Jody Clark. Her head faces towards the right, adorned with her royal crown and elegant jewelry.

On the reverse side, the shield has the English lion on one side and the Scottish unicorn on the other side with a garter circling its neck. The shield is engraved with “HONI SOIT QUI MALY PENSE”, a French maxim translated as “May he be shamed who thinks badly of it.” The shield is also divided into quadrants including three lions of England on guard, highlighted in the first and fourth quadrants. The second quadrant includes the wild lion, and the third quadrant highlights a harp for Ireland. All four quadrants represent the United Kingdom.
