The platinum Britannia coin comes from a strong pedigree. The British royal mint began producing Britannia coins in 1987 with the issue of the Gold Britannia Coin, followed by the release of the Silver Britannia Coin in 1997. In 2018, the Royal mint finally expanded into platinum, making this coin a relatively recent addition, and a great opportunity to get in on the ground floor of a new series.

Emerging as early as the 1st century AD as a term among Roman emperors, “Britannia” traces its roots to a time of great conquest. The concept developed as the Roman rule of Britain became more established and became the name of a mythical figure charged with defending the British Isles against those who would dare invade them.

The reverse of this coin features Britannia as she holds a trident to defend the British isles. She wears a toga to represent her Roman heritage, and her left hand is holding an olive branch and a shield bearing the Union Jack.

The obverse of this platinum coin displays the well-known effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, facing right while wearing her royal crown.
