The Mexican Silver Libertads are produced by La Casa de Moneda de Mexico, also known as the Mexican Mint. Initially established in 1535, this mint is impressively the oldest mint in all of North America. However, the Mexican Libertad Silver Coin series was introduced many years later in 1982. As the interest surrounding these coins grew, the Mexican Mint diversified the Libertad’s sizes. Starting in 1991, they began releasing 1/20 oz, 1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/2 oz options. The reverse displays a rendition of the "El Ángel" or Angel of Independence, a monument built in 1910 to celebrate the beginning of Mexico's War of Independence. A backdrop of the Mexican landscape features two of Mexico’s most famous volcanoes, Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl.
