The Mexican Silver Libertads are struck by La Casa de Moneda de Mexico, also known as the Mexican Mint. As the oldest mint in North America, it was initially established in 1535. However, the Mexican Libertad Silver series was introduced many years later in 1982. As interest grew, the Mexican Mint diversified the Libertad’s sizes starting in 1991, with 1/20 oz, 1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/2 oz options. Just five years later, the 2 oz and 5 oz Mexican Libertads further expanded the coin program to appease the high demand from collectors. Be sure to diversify with a Silver Libertad coin today.
The obverse displays the Mexican Coat of Arms surrounded by the different national coats of arms used throughout Mexican history. The centered image includes an eagle perched on a cactus with a snake in its beak and talon. The image sits inside a circular design. The top bears the inscription "Estados Unidos Mexicanos", and the bottom portion showcases an olive and oak wreath.
The reverse features an image of the "El Ángel" or Angel of Independence, a monument built in 1910 to celebrate the beginning of Mexico's War of Independence. Victory, the Roman goddess- holds a laurel wreath in her outstretched right hand, signifying victory. In her left hand, she holds a broken chain depicting freedom. A backdrop of the Mexican landscape features two of Mexico’s most famous volcanoes, Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl.
