Stories of “Terra Australis” originate back to back to Roman times when Australia was referred to as the ‘unknown land of the south’. Different versions and renderings of “Terra Australis” appeared on world maps between the 15th and 18th centuries as explorers traversed the Pacific Ocean. Then, in 1770, the British navigator James Cook arrived at this beautiful continent in the British Royal Navy’s HM Bark Endeavour. Lieutenant Cook is credited with producing the first charted maps of the east coast. This historic voyage paved the way for several previously unknown species of flora and fauna to be documented for future generations. These species have since come to define the beauty and ecological diversity of Australia.

The obverse of the coin showcases Jody Clark’s regal depiction of Queen Elizabeth II. 

The reverse of the coin, designed by Aleysha Howarth, contains a gorgeous outer rim which displays representations of iconic Australian land animals. These animals include the kangaroo, koala, bilby, goanna, emu, echidna, wombat, Tasmanian devil, frilled-neck lizard, and the eastern brown snake. A striking opal insert shaped like Australia is prominently featured in the center of the coin. The coin’s purity, weight, and “P” mintmark appear on the reverse as well.
