The obverse displays a majestic image of the Mexican Coat of Arms - an eagle with a snake in its talon and beak. The image is inside a circular design comprising of two halves. The top half shows the words "Estados Unidos Mexicanos" inscribed in an arc, and the bottom consists of an oak and olive wreath. Surrounding it are previous versions of the modern coat of arms.
The reverse of the Libertad touts an image of the "El Ángel" or Angel of Independence, constructed in 1910 to celebrate the beginning of Mexico's War of Independence. Victoria, the Roman goddess of victory, holds the laurel wreath of success in her outstretched hand. Her other hand holds a symbol of freedom - a broken chain. A Mexican landscape in the background of the reverse features two volcanoes, Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl.
