The obverse features the Mexican Coat of Arms, with an eagle holding a snake in its beak and talon. The image is encircled by the words "Estados Unidos Mexicanos" above and an olive and oak wreath below.
The reverse displays a rendering of the "El Ángel" or Angel of Independence, a monument built in 1910 to celebrate the beginning of Mexico's War of Independence. Victoria, the Roman goddess of victory, holds a laurel wreath of victory in her outstretched hand. Her other hand holds a symbol of freedom--a broken chain. The background showcases two of Mexico’s most iconic volcanoes, Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl.
