The obverse features a right facing profile portrait of a Native American. This design is the same one that was used on James Earle Fraser's "Buffalo Nickel" which was minted between 1913 and 1938. The Native American appears solemn and has a feather in his hair. His image was created by incorporating the facial features of three historic Native American chiefs: Big Tree, Iron Tail, and Two Moons. Other features of the obverse include the year of mintage, "2018," "LIBERTY," a tiny "F" engraver's mint mark, and a "W" mint mark.

The reverse displays an American Buffalo. The image is meant to represent Black Diamond who was a bison that lived in New York City's Central Park Zoo in the early 1900s. Other inscriptions include "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "IN GOD WE TRUST" along with the denomination, purity, and weight. This coin is legal tender in the United States and is fully backed by the U.S. government.
