2018 1 oz Austrian Platinum Philharmonic Coin BU

The Austrian Mint is one of the oldest government-run mints in the world and has been functioning for over 800 years. Their products are extremely popular throughout the globe, particularly Philharmonics coins, which come in three different precious metal options: gold, silver, and platinum. The gold Philharmonic coin was the first to be produced in 1989, the silver started in 2008, and platinum was released only recently, in 2016.

Platinum is a rare precious metal, occurring at least 15-20 times more rarely in nature compared to gold and silver, and has become a favored metal for investing. The Philharmonic in platinum has a smoother edge compared to its gold equivalent and pays tribute to the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra of Austria, one of the finest in the world.

Similar to its gold and silver counterparts, the platinum Philharmonic features the same design, created by Thomas Pesendorfer, of the Great Pipe Organ of Vienna Musikverein Golden Hall on its obverse along with the coin’s face value, weight, content, and purity. The reverse features an array of instruments used by the orchestra. The face value was denoted in Austrian Schillings (ATS) between 1989 and 2001. However, in 2002, when the European Union adopted the Euro as its currency, the face value of the Philharmonics began to be displayed in Euros.

Philharmonics are one of the best-selling bullion coins in the world.
