2017 Netherlands Silver 1 oz Lion Dollar Proof Restrike NGC PF 70 Early Releases

This stunning coin is a piece of significant historical reference from the renowned Royal Dutch Mint. 2017 marks the 450th anniversary of this facility. To celebrate this date the refinery has released an official restrike of the standard Dutch Lion Dollar which was circulated during the 16th-18th centuries. This original Lion Dollar was the first silver dollar in the New World and the basis for U.S. dollar denomination.

Containing 1 troy ounce of silver, the coin features the same design as the original bullion, struck due to the latest producing technologies. Originally struck at the end of the 16th century, at the same time the Royal Dutch Mint was founded in 1567, this outstanding coin marked a new era for the Dutch Republic, now the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Dutch coins were used by traders for worldwide business, had a high demand and became one of the most iconic coins in precious metals history.

By using modern digital scanning techniques the Royal Dutch Mint created a perfect piece of craftsmanship, improving on the original to create an excellent quality restrike version.

The coin’s obverse depicts an image of the rampant lion, the “King of Beasts”, representing the timeless values of bravery, aristocracy, and royalty. The image is encircled by two rims and inscriptions. The coin’s reverse showcases the armored Knight holding the Dutch Coat of Arms. The design was directly digitally transferred and enhanced from the original strikes from 1617.
