This commemorative 2017 1 oz Silver JFK Solomon Islands PCGS MS 69 First Strike is the exclusive release at Bullion Exchanges. Minted by the Royal Australian Mint this stunning coin pays tribute to the 100^th anniversary of the 35^th president of the United States - John Fitzgerald Kennedy. John F. Kennedy was considered one of the most influential and respected presidents in history. He was a brilliant orator, who inspired an entire generation of young Americans to engage in the country’s public service.

There is a significant story behind the coin design. On August 2, 1943, Lt. Kennedy’s crew patrolled the waters in the British Solomon Islands. A Japanese destroyer suddenly became visible and crashed the PT-109, splitting it in half. Most of Kennedy’s crew were thrown into the water by the force of the impact - two were killed and one was badly burned. For several days they were lost on a small abandoned island, looking for the way back.

Finally two natives - Kumana and his friend Biuku Gasa, who were Coastwatchers based across the Pacific islands during WWII found Kennedy’s crew. With few options, they helped the crew send a message out on a coconut. The memory of Kumana and Gasa lived on in the engraved coconut husk and in "shell money", a traditional form of Solomon currency. Kumana sent this currency to the US as a tribute to Kennedy and today it can be found at the John F Kennedy Presidential Library. In addition, the island where Kennedy’s boat crashed was named now called “Kennedy Island.”
