The obverse features James Earle Fraser's "Buffalo Nickel" design of an American Indian along with the inscriptions "LIBERTY," "F," and the year of mintage.

The reverse portrays an American Buffalo which is meant to represent Black Diamond who was a bison that lived in the Central Park Zoo of New York City in the early 1900's. Inscriptions include "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "IN GOD WE TRUST." along with the denomination, purity, and weight.
