The 2016-W 1 oz Proof Silver American Eagle marks the 30^th anniversary of its first release. This issue has smooth lettered edges, a special feature, used in a Silver American Eagle Series for the first time.

Proof American Silver Eagles have been minted at the San Francisco facility of the US Mint from 1986 to 1992, carrying the “S” mintmark. Between 1993 and 2000, the proof coins were produced at the Philadelphia facility, having the “P” mintmark. Between 2001-­2008 and starting with 2010, the Proof American Silver Eagles are manufactured at the West Point facility, bearing the “W” mintmark. No Proof Silver Eagles were minted in 2009 because the high silver demand forced the mint to supply the blanks for the bullion coin.

Mercanti and shows a majestic eagle, carrying a shield and holding arrows in its left talon and an olive branch in its right talon, symbolizing preparedness to defend America and desire for peace. The eagle also holds a banner in its beak with the words “E Pluribus Unum”. Above the eagle’s image are engraved the thirteen stars honoring the thirteen original colonies. On the coin’s rim are also inscribed the words “United States of America”, as well as the coin’s weight, purity, and face value.
