Detailed Information:
Since Medieval periods gold and silver coins containing images of Angels have been treasured by Kings and Queens as well as commoners, who believed that these coins brought them good luck and kept them in good health. Angels are messengers of God and serve as guardians for individuals, people, and nation. One special angel has been used more than the others on these coins and his name is St. Michael. He is not just an angel but known as archangel or a chief angel.
It is said that after God created heaven and earth, and before admitting the angels to heaven, he revealed to them of the future incarnation of his Divine Son being born on earth as human and they had to revere his sacred humanity and the angels were also revealed about glory of Virgin Mary, the Mother of God, who they had to revere as their Queen.
This revelation did not go well with Lucifer, the beautiful and gifted angel of all. He felt it was impossible to revere human nature as his own angelic nature was superior to that and he also rebelled against revering a human being as his Queen. He along with a third of the angels rebelled against God. At the same time, St. Michael, God’s most loyal angel with the other two thirds of the angels defeated Lucifer, who had now become the Satan or the Dragon and all his supporters had become devils. As a reward for his loyalty, God made him the chief of angels or Archangel.
In both western and eastern arts, St. Michael has certain standard characteristics. He is winged, he has a halo to denote his sanctity, he is either holding a sword or a scale, and he is often seen trampling a winged or horned Satan or dragon under his foot and slaying it with his sword. This is a symbolic image of Good triumphing over Evil.
It is believed that holding a coin containing an image of Archangel Michael protects a person’s life, protection from bad luck, bad health, bad reputation, any mishap while traveling, and it also helps in spiritual guidance.
The Isle of Man Angel series is inspired by history. Edward IV in 1465 introduced the original Angel gold coin to England as a new issued of the Noble. The iconic design of Archangel Michael slaying the dragon was thought to bring good luck and health. It was traditionally given the people who were suffering from the disease “Kings Evil” or scrofula in a medieval ceremony intending to cure the sufferer with the ‘royal touch.’
The modern Angel is the third design featured on the coin since 1984. It is one of the world’s foremost bullions and a legal tender. Approved by the Buckingham Palace, the obverse features a majestic rightward facing portrait of Queen Elizabeth II which is a design by the famous sculptor Ian Rank-Broadley. Inscriptions are “ELIZABETH II,” “ISLE OF MAN,” and year of mintage “2016,” each inscription separated by Triskelion, a symbol of the Isle of Man flag.
The reverse features a beautiful modern image of Archangel St. Michael slaying the dragon with his spear while shielding himself from the dragon’s flaming breath. Inscriptions: Pobjoy Mint mark “P” to indicate that this is the mint’s first reverse proof production. “Ag .999,” “1 ounce,” “ANGEL.”
Each of these Pobjoy Mint silver coins has been produced maintain high standards and has been struck four times to achieve the amazing reverse proof finish, which has a frosted-finish background with the design sculpted in striking relief. The very low mintage of 100,000 coins, the extreme artistic value, and the fine .999 silver content have made this a highly desirable coin by collectors and investors alike.
