Star Trek raised the bar for other television series. The original Star Trek series was aired in 1966 on NBC, and it was the brainchild of Gene Roddenberry. Set in the 23rd century, the concept was avant-garde and took up a lot of research and hard work to come up with a concept as fine as this. The series was a short-lived one and had only three seasons which ended in 1969. However, the popularity of the show was phenomenal which led to several more television series as well as feature films.
2016 marks the 50th anniversary of the original Star Trek series and, to celebrate, the Perth Mint has released the latest Star Trek coin which features the legendary spaceship, the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701. Aboard this spaceship is the famous crew of Star Trek led by the highly celebrated Captain James T. Kirk. It is under his command that the ship went on a 5-year mission during which time it came across several new civilizations, encountered numerous first contacts, took up several scientific missions and brought on several diplomatic and military engagements. Ultimately when about to be caught by the Klingons, the ship was destroyed when the captain activated the auto-destructive sequence to escape from the Klingons and thus the life of the venerable U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 spaceship was cut short.
On the obverse, the coin features a beautiful profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II a design by Ian Rank-Broadley.
