Detailed Information:

Star Trek was and is one of America’s and the world’s favorite entertainment franchise. Created by Gene Roddenberry, the original series was aired in 1966, and 2016 marks the 50th anniversary of this show. Although it was a short-lived series which had only three seasons under its belt, in the coming years, there were many more television series and movies of Star Trek that became extremely popular. The characters from the original series achieved a cult status, and some of the dialogues from Star Trek came into colloquial usage.

Some of the famous characters of the original series are;

Captain James T. Kirk played by William Shatner. In a video blog, he revealed that he never watched the television show or any of the Star Trek movies as he did not like to watch himself on TV or screen.

Commander Spock, a half-Vulcan and half-human science officer played by Leonard Nimoy. Originally, Spock was intended to have a dark red skin. However, this had to be abandoned as the skin would look black on a black and white TV. He was also not intended to eat or drink, instead he would absorb energy that struck to a plate present in the middle of his stomach, this too was abandoned later on.

Lieutenant Commander Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy, chief medical officer of the Enterprise played by DeForest Kelley. He was originally considered for the role of Spock. Lieutenant Nyota Uhura, communications officer played by Nichelle Nichols. The interracial kiss that happened between Uhura and Kirk was originally meant to be between Uhura and Spock. Lieutenant Hikaru Sulu, helmsman, played by George Takei. Since a nationally specific surname was not the choice of Gene Roddenberry, he gave the last name Sulu to the character Hikaru Sulu after the Sulu Sea.

Star Trek also was one of the first of its kind to feature interracial characters.

Kirk is the captain of the famous U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 which undertakes a 5-year mission to explore different areas of the space, find new civilizations, and undertake scientific missions and military engagements.

The Perth Mint coin sports the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 on its reverse, and on the obverse it features the profile portrait of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. This is a legal tender issue of the Island of Tuvalu. The coin is extremely popular with not just collectors and investors but also trekkers. The coin has a limited mintage of just 50,000 coins and is very rare to come by.
