The traditional Chinese Lunar Calendar is based on 24 seasonal segments with each year associated to a particular animal in a 12- year cycle. Twelve animals are used to symbolize the year of a person’s birth: rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig. Also known as a person’s Shengxiao – sheng means the year of birth, while Xiao means resemblance. Those conceived in the year of the monkey include people born in 1932, 1944, 1956, 1968, 1980, 1992, 2004, 2016, 2028, and 2040.
Featured on the reverse side of the 2016 Australia 1 kilo Silver Lunar Monkey BU (In Capsule) Coin is an adult monkey and one child monkey perched on a peach tree branch. Both monkeys are firmly grasping the branch, while the younger monkey holds a peach in its palm. The character for Monkey is inscribed, along with “Year of the Monkey”, and Perth Mint’s “P” mintmark.
The obverse side depicts the Ian-Rank Broadley’s portrait of her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, with “ELIZABETH II”, “AUSTRALIA”, 1KG 999 SILVER” “2016”, and “30 DOLLARS” engraved along the rim of the coin.
