Each 2015 2 oz Cook Islands Silver Norse Gods Tyr Ultra High Relief Coin has been struck in brilliant ultra-high-relief proof, and features an antique finish.
Tyr was first mentioned in Norse mythology as a courageous Germanic War God, however he eventually became Odin, the father of all gods trusted second in command. Tales of Tyr differ and are few, yet he appears to have been viewed as one of the prime war deities of Norse, alongside Odin and Thor.
Tyr, although known for his extraordinary bravery, accepted the aid of the other deities to bind Fenir, the wolf and son of Loki. This was no easy feat, yet the gods managed to place the twine around him under the condition that one of the gods would place their hand in his mouth as a sign of good faith. Unable to free himself, Fernir suspected that he had been deceived and bit off Tyr’s hand. Tyr’s one-handedness is by all accounts one his characterizing traits, but more importantly serves as an example of why he was in many tales considered Odin’s trusted war god, and son.
Featured on the obverse side is a depiction of Tyr in his war armor while commanding the army of gods behind him and appearing to be ready for war with his right arm outstretched to highlight his defining attribute. The design is completed with the inscriptions “NORSE GODS”, and “TYR” encircling the image.
The reverse side features Ian Rank-Broadley’s 1998 right facing effigy of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, along with the engravings “ELIZABETH II”, “COOK ISLANDS”, and “10 DOLLARS” along the rim of the coin.
