Hel, daughter of trickster god Loki and giantess Angrboda is the goddess of death. She was banished from Asgard by Odin, the King of the Aesir tribe, and father of all deities. He sent her to the underworld, where she would govern Niflhel, a frigid, misty place that is home to dismal souls. The name Hel was connected both to the Queen of the Underworld and to the land she ruled. In Old Norse mythology, her name was inspired by the world of the dead.

The obverse side of each 2015 2 oz Cook Islands Silver Norse Gods Hel Ultra High Relief Coin features Hel, as a half-flesh and half-skeleton deity standing guard of the gloomy underworld with the engravings “NORSE GODS”, and “HEL” surrounding the depiction. The reverse side features a portrait Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II along with inscriptions of Her Majesty’s name, the coins face value, and year of issue.

BH Mayer Mint’s Norse Gods Series includes nine coins, each featuring the most a prolific deities from Norse mythology. This highly reputable family-owned and operated mint has been manufacturing excellence since 1871, and this series is no exception. Each of these remarkable coins has been struck with an antique finish. A chemical toning process is used to achieve the aged appearance of these coins.
