The reverse, designed by Ing Ing Jong, shows an adult koala seated in the fork of a eucalyptus tree against a rural Australian landscape. The obverse features Ian Rank-Broadley’s portrait of Queen Elizabeth II with the $100 AUD face value. Original Perth Mint packaging and Certificate of Authenticity accompany the NGC-certified coin.
The Australian Koala series, introduced by the Perth Mint in 2007, honors one of the country’s most recognizable native animals with a new reverse design each year. Koalas are nocturnal marsupials that live in eucalyptus forests along Australia’s east coast, feeding almost exclusively on selected gum leaves. High-relief proof issues from this series are struck on specially prepared planchets so the koala and surrounding landscape rise in three-dimensional detail against deeply mirrored fields, creating the dramatic contrast that Ultra Cameo grading rewards.
