A coin which commemorates the Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum is out! The design not just honors the Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, but also looks like a baseball! Baseball, the national sport of the US has given birth to so many legends and so many unbreakable records, and all of these are honored in the Baseball Hall of Fame. What better way to honor the 75th anniversary of the Baseball Hall of Fame than with releasing a baseball shaped coin.
A public design competition was held for the common obverse design of the coin and around 178 designs were received. The design had to be approved by a panel of National Baseball Hall of Fame members, Commission of Fine Arts, and Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee. The panel approved the design of Cassie McFarland of San Luis Obispo, California, which depicted the 1960’s style of the baseball glove.
Per the authorizing legislation, the coin had to be similar in the convex and concave shape of the 2009 International Year of Astronomy Coins issued by the Monnaie de Paris. Not only did the US Mint meet that requirement for the gold, silver, and clad National Baseball Hall of Fame coins, but they also gave the designs a much more prominent relief than the French coin. The shape of the coin is also similar to the Southern Cross curved coins from the Royal Australian Mint.
The US Mint worked closely with the Royal Australian Mint as well as Perth Mint to achieve the convex and concave shape of the coin. The open glove design is apt with the convex obverse side which gives an illusion that the glove is open with its convex groove ready to catch a baseball in real. The leather texture of the glove looks very realistic due to the deeply frosted finish.
The dome shape on the concave reverse on the other hand is apt with the design of the baseball which gives an illusion of a realistic looking baseball when you see the coin from the top of the concave dome. One can even see the prominent stitches of the baseball. The reverse was designed by the United States Mint Sculptor and Engraver, Don Everhart.
The silver dollars were minted in proof and uncirculated condition at the Philadelphia Mint and bears the “P” Mint Mark on them.
The proof coins come in a stunning Deep Cameo condition which gives an awesome mirror-like background, while the designs are deeply frosted giving an incredible eye appeal to the coins. The high contrast of the mirror and deep frost looks fantastic.
Upon the release of the coins, they sold out quickly, as they not just attracted collectors and investors but also common public and sports lovers.
