Detailed Information:
September 11, 2001 was a black day in the American history, as New York suffered a catastrophic terror attack on the World Trade Center as well as the Pentagon. The entire world was shaken by this devastating incident. In 2011, to pay tribute and honor all those who perished in this incident, those who risked their lives to save others, and those who survived it, US Mint released a 2011 9/11 National Medal in silver.
President Barack Obama authorized the minting of these silver medals by signing the National September 11 Memorial & Museum Commemorative Medal Act of 2010 (Public Law 111-221) on August 6, 2010. The medal commemorates the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attack and the establishment of the National September 11 Memorial & Museum at the World Trade Center.
The Secretary of the Treasury is required to strike around 2 million of these US Silver Medals and offer for sale. Half of these medals were minted at the Philadelphia Mint and West Point Mint bearing the mint marks “P” and “W” respectively.
US Mint had received around two dozen designs. A consultation was held by the US Mint with a panel of U.S. Commission of Fine Arts and National September 11 Memorial & Museum members regarding these designs. Also, these designs were reviewed by the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee, thus the design by Donna Weaver, a master designer from the United States Mint Artistic Infusion Program, was selected for both obverse as well as reverse. The obverse and reverse design was sculpted by Phebe Hemphill and Joseph Menna respectively, both of whom are sculptors/engravers of the United States Mint.
The obverse design features Lady Liberty lifting up the Lamp of Remembrance and on the background are two beacons of light stretching skywards. These beacons of light resemble the Tribute of Light, an art installation made of 88 searchlights present at the site next to the site of the World Trade Center. These two beacons of light stretch skywards and can be seen from a very far distance. The lamp of the light held by Liberty symbolizes the immense loss of the apocalyptic day as well as the true endurance and resilience of those who preserved and prevailed the incident.
The reverse design features an eagle on a backdrop of cascading water. The eagle represents the strength of the survivors, families, and nation. The cascading water represents the peace, serenity, healing and the continuity of life.
