Detailed Information:

Bravery goes hand in hand with the word soldier; however, there are few army men who prove their mettle beyond bravery, they risk everything to protect their nation and its people. To identify and honor their selfless act, their sacrifice, their unbelievable courage, their presence of mind which averts danger; US Armed Forces awards the ultimate honor to such individuals and it is known as the Medal of Honor. The highly esteemed medal was first issued in 1861 to honor the brave navy men and it was known as the Medal of Valor. The Medal of Honor for Air Force was first issued in 1956. The design of medal for each wing is different; however, the light blue moire silk ribbon that holds them is similar in design and the center of the ribbon features 13 Stars which represent the 13 original colonies of USA and they are arranged in a Chevron pattern.

The Medal of Honor is one of the only two United States military medals to be worn on neck, the other being the Commander's Degree of the Legion of Merit. The Medal of Honor is awarded by the President of United States of America to the U.S. Military personnel only in the name of the U.S. Congress in a formal ceremony held at the White House.

2011 marked the 150th anniversary of the first issue of Medal of Honor, and to commemorate this event, US Mint released the US Medal of Honor Commemorative Coins after being authorized by the "Medal of Honor Commemorative Coin Act of 2009," (Public Law 111-91). The Act was authorized by Congress and signed into law by President Obama on November 6, 2009. The coins were minted in Gold and Silver versions. The gold version had a face value of $5 and a different design. The silver coins have a face value of $1 with a different design. Per the Act, the Secretary of Treasury needed to mint 100,000 gold coins and 500,000 silver coins. The silver dollars are made of 90% silver and 10% copper.

The silver dollars were released in two versions the Proof version and the Uncirculated version. The Proof versions were all minted at the Philadelphia Mint and the Uncirculated versions were all minted at the San Francisco Mint.

The Act required the designs to uphold the traditions, legacy, and heritage of the Medal of Honor, and the distinguished service of its recipients.

This is a coin that brings out patriotic feeling in each and every one. The coin reminds us of the sacrifices and selfless acts of our soldiers who defend our nation day and night so that we can live peacefully and enjoy our freedom and liberty. Own this coin and show off your patriotism.
