This is the 21st release of the popular Australian series that portrays the native Australian bird - Kookaburra. The 1 oz Silver Australian Kookaburra Coin has been one of the numismatic favorite series since its debut in 1990. Silver Kookaburra coins have a higher collectible value than some other bullion, due to the annual design change and limited mintages.
The 2011 release has a total mintage of 500,000 coins, each individual contains 1 troy ounce of .999 fine silver, and has a face value of $1 dollar. Each year the coin’s reverse depicts a new illustration of a kookaburra, a bird native to Australia.
The design showcases a kookaburra with an upturned beak, perched on the edge of a jagged tree stump, with wings extended and ready for flight on the reverse. The design is created by Australian illustrator Elise Martinson. The obverse features the fourth effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II to appear on a coin, designed by Ian Rank-Broadley.
