To commemorate the 200^th birthday of one of the greatest presidents in American history, Abraham Lincoln, the US Mint has released the Abraham Lincoln Silver Dollars which includes this 2009-P Abraham Lincoln Proof Silver Dollar. Lincoln served the nation as the 16th President of the United States of America from 1861-1865.

One of the most recognizable faces in American history is President Abraham Lincoln, well-known as a remarkable leader of this country. He had a humble beginning being born to a family of farmers in Hardin County, Kentucky in a one-room log cabin on February 12, 1809. Although Lincoln had less than a year of formal schooling, he was an autodidact and an avid reader, teaching himself law and passing the 1836 bar examination to become a lawyer. He was popularly known as “Honest Abe,” a reputation he earned when he was working as a lawyer in Springfield Illinois. Lincoln became the 16th President of United States of America in 1860.

Lincoln is highly regarded as the most revered president of USA, for he served the nation during the most difficult times of the Civil War. He had a strong role in abolishing slavery from America. His great skills as commander in chief, great social policies, and prodigious oratory skills have all elevated him to be one of the greatest presidents of USA. Lincoln was a kind man, who was against hunting innocent animals even for food. He was also extremely popular for his wit and cleverness. The obverse features the head and shoulder portrait of Abraham Lincoln which is based on the Daniel Chester French’s famous sculpture that is present in the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. The obverse has been designed by United States Mint Artistic Infusion Program Master Designer Justin Kunz and sculpted by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Don Everhart. The design is a low angle shot to give the feel that you are lifting your head and looking at the real statue inside the Lincoln Memorial.

The reverse features the last 43 words from the famous Gettysburg speech given by Lincoln which is “We here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain - that this Nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom - and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.” The quotation is bracketed by laurel wreath. There is a curling banner under the wreath which holds the replica of Lincoln’s signature.

A total of 450,000 coins were released of which 125,000 coins were brilliant uncirculated and 325,000 were proof coins. Within 6 weeks all the coins were sold out as this is an extremely popular coin and everybody wanted to own at least one of these coins.
