In 2007, the United States Mint released the first four coins in a series of Gold First Spouse Coins. These coins are the government's first 1/2 oz .9999 fine Gold coins and are also the first commemorative 1/2 oz Gold coins. With a face value of $10, these Gold coins are minted and released annually in the order the First Ladies served in the White House. Each First Spouse Gold Coin will coincide with the release of the four annual Presidential $1 Coins. The United States Mint certifies that this coin is a genuine coin, struck in accordance with legislation passed by Congress and signed by the President on December 22, 2005 (Public Law 109-145). This coin was produced by the Department of the Treasury, United States Mint. This coin is legal tender of the United States.
The obverse of the First Spouse Gold coin features a portrait of the First Lady with an inscription of their name, presidential order and years of their term as first spouse, along with the year of minting. The reverse highlights a unique image emblematic of that spouse's life and work. In the few cases when a president served without a spouse, a Gold coin is issued bearing an image of Liberty, while the reverse shows an image depicting the president's life.
This beautiful 2007 uncirculated coin portrays Elizabeth Monroe, First Lady to James Monroe. Born in New York City in 1768, Elizabeth married James Monroe at age 17. Elizabeth was by her husband's side as he served as U.S. Foreign Minister to Great Britain, France, and Spain. When she entered the White House as the First Lady, Elizabeth brought with her a European stateliness and formality that she had acquired from her time spent in Europe.
The obverse side of the coin features a portrait of Elizabeth Monrow. Above the portrait depicts her name, "Elizabeth Monroe" and below the portrait depicts the presidency in which James Monroe was in term, "5th 1817-1825". The right side of the portrait has the inscription "LIBERTY; 2008 W", and the left side has the inscription " IN GOD WE TRUST". The reverse side portrays the grand New Year’s Day reception marking the reopening of the White House, which was rebuilt after its burning by the British in the War of 1812. Circling the rim on the reverse side are the words "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "E PLURIBUS UNUM", "$10", and "1/2 OZ. .9999 Fine gold."
