The 2008 Olympics took place in Beijing, China from August 8-24th. During this event, almost 11,000 athletes participated in the summer games consisting of 28 sports and 302 events. This gold coin was struck to commemorate this event as it was the first time China hosted the Summer Olympics. The official logo for the 2008 Games was titled the “Dancing Beijing”, which is designed after the calligraphic version of the Chinese character "jing" to pay homage to the host city. China won most of the gold medals that year and the US came second in gold medal tally despite winning the highest amount of medals overall. The next Olympics China will host is planned to be the Beijing Winter Olympics in 2022.

The obverse features the traditional paired Chinese Dragon image along with the red “Dancing Beijing” logo of the Summer Olympic Games, the XXIX Olympiad, and the year of mintage. Around the top of the border is the Chinese lettering for “The People’s Republic of China”.

The reverse displays five of the major Summer Olympics events with the Olympic rings in the background. The top of the coin contains Chinese characters that translate to  “Games of the XXIX Olympiad”. The denomination is inscribed at the bottom.
