The Statue of Liberty was designed by French sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi, who presented it as a gift to the United States on October 28, 1886. The statue depicts a robed female figure representing Libertas (the Roman goddess). She holds a torch and a tabula ansata (a tablet evoking the law), which is inscribed with the date the US Declaration of Independence was signed: July 4, 1776. The statue is a beacon of freedom and offers a welcoming sight to immigrants arriving from abroad.

The obverse features John Mercanti‘s design of the Statue of Liberty, gazing confidently forward. Lady Liberty, a symbol of freedom and opportunity, wears a seven-point crown with her right arm raised above her. Inscriptions: “LIBERTY”, “E PLURIBUS UNUM”, “IN GOD WE TRUST”, and the year of issue.

The reverse was designed by U.S. Mint sculptor Thomas D. Rogers, and features a soaring American eagle flying above a rising sun. Inscriptions: “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”, the denomination, and the weight and purity of the coin.
