In 2001, this silver coin was released after a campaign by Colorado Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell. His goal was to raise money for America’s National Parks by bringing back the popular design of the Indian Head/Buffalo Nickel. The classic design was created by James Earle Fraser. When this Proof Silver American Buffalo $1 coin was minted in 2001, the inscriptions were updated to “ONE DOLLAR” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.” The Buffalo’s legs were shortened to accommodate these additions. There is no mint artist credited with these design changes, but Fraser’s initial “F” can be seen on the coin!
