This silver coin was released in 2001 due to the encouragement of Colorado Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell. His goal was to honor the popularity of the Indian Head/Buffalo Nickel design by bringing it back to raise money for America’s National Parks. The original design was created by James Earle Fraser. For this Proof Silver American Buffalo $1 coin in 2001, the inscriptions were changed to “ONE DOLLAR” and the added the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST.”  To accommodate the new inscriptions, the Buffalo’s legs were shortened, updating the image. Even though there is no artist credited with these design changes, Fraser’s initial “F” is printed on the coin.
