This Silver American Buffalo $1 coin was minted in 2001 thanks to a campaign by Colorado Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell. His goal was to bring back the Indian Head/Buffalo Nickel design to raise money for America’s National Parks. The original image was created by James Earle Fraser. In 2001 the inscriptions were changed to read “ONE DOLLAR” and the added the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST.” The Buffalo’s legs were shortened to accommodate the new inscriptions, updating the design. While there is no artist credited with these changes, Fraser’s initial “F” can be seen on the coin.
