2001 D 1/2 oz Bessie Coleman Concept Dollar Silver Medal ICG PF 69 DCAM

Add a piece of history to your collection with the 2001 D 1/2 oz Bessie Coleman Concept Dollar Silver Medal ICG PF 69 DCAM! This Concept Silver Dollar is graded by ICG as Proof 69 (PF 69) and Deep Cameo (DCAM).

This prototype coin was created by Daniel Carr, who presented it in 1998 to the Dollar Coin Design Advisory Committee (DCDAC). The DCDAC was trying to decide which woman to portray on a new US “Golden” $1 circulating coin. Carr’s design portrayed Bessie Coleman who was a pilot known for her stunt flying. Interestingly, Bessie Coleman was the first African-American woman and the first Native American to obtain a pilot license. Carr's design was runner-up to the Sacagawea design, which ended up being chosen.

The obverse features Bessie Coleman wearing her aviation uniform, a soaring airplane, and thirteen stars. The year displayed is 2001, because they weren’t sure when the new coin would be issued.

The reverse depicts a bald eagle in flight across the sun. To comply with US regulations, the reverse is marked "NON DOLLAR" instead of "ONE DOLLAR," making it extremely clear that this is a prototype.
