This platinum American Eagle is graded by PCGS as Mint State 64: a coin with a good, overall average luster and even strike for the type. This much anticipated and eagerly collected coin contains 1 troy ounce of .9995 fine platinum.
The American Platinum Eagle is the official platinum bullion coin of the United States. In 1995, Director of the United States Mint, Philip N. Diehl, American Numismatic Association President, David L. Ganz, and Platinum Guild International Executive Director, Jacques Luben, began the legislative process of creating the Platinum Eagle. After over two years of work, the coins were first released by the United States Mint in 1997. It is offered in 1/10, 1/4, 1/2, and 1 troy oz varieties and consists of .9995 fine platinum. The American Platinum Eagle is authorized by the United States Congress, and is backed by the United States Mint for weight and content.
The obverse features John Mercanti‘s design exhibiting a portrait of the Statue of Liberty gazing confidently forward, a symbol of freedom and opportunity, wearing a seven-point crown with her right arm rising above her. "LIBERTY" is inscribed across the top of the bullion coin, and "E PLURIBUS UNUM" is located in the lower left of the coin. The year the coin was issued and "IN GOD WE TRUST" are to the right side of Lady Liberty.
The Statue of Liberty was designed by Frederic Auguste Bartholdi, a French sculptor, who presented this as a gift to the United States on October 28, 1886. It's located on Liberty Island in New York Harbor. The statue is of a robed female figure representing Libertas (the Roman goddess) who bears a torch and a tabula ansata (a tablet evoking the law) upon which is inscribed the date of the United States Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776. The statue is an icon of freedom and of the United States which represents a welcoming signal to immigrants arriving from abroad.
The reverse was designed by U.S. Mint sculptor Thomas D. Rogers and features a soaring American eagle with outstretched wings above a newly rising sun, with "United States of America" above. The purity (.9995), the metal (platinum), and the Weight (1 oz ) of the platinum bullion coin is found to the right of the eagle's beak, and the Face Value ($100) is at the bottom.
