The United States of America saw a sudden influx in gold when the California Gold Rush struck in 1849. A copious amount of gold was flowing in from the California mines to the US Mint. This lead the United States Government to make some historical changes in the monetary system. It authorized the US Mint to produce a higher denomination than the one that was prevalent at that time. Till that time, the $10 Gold Eagle was the highest denomination that was used in trade. Now a denomination that was double the $10, and $20 gold coins were released. Since the denomination was double the S10 coins, $20 got its famous name Double Eagle.
These coins were made from .900 pure gold. The Double Eagle that was introduced in the beginning was a design by James B. Longacre which was known as the $20 Double Eagle Liberty Head. It was struck from 1850 to 1907.
President Theodore Roosevelt plays a very important role in bringing the $20 Gold Double Eagle Saint Gaudens into existence. Theodore Roosevelt was of the opinion that coins were the most visible and palpable representations of a nation. He felt that coins of that era were unattractive and he wanted a revival of the American coinage. For this, he appointed the most famous sculptor of that time and one of his dearest friends Augustus Saint-Gaudens, in whose work he had faith. Augustus Saint-Gaudens proved Theodore Roosevelt right when he came up with the most beautiful and iconic Lady Liberty image which would go down the history as one of the most beautiful coins of American coinage history.
The obverse of the Saint Gaudens Double Eagle Gold coin features a full-length portrait of Lady Liberty who also represents victory striding forward holding a lit torch in her right hand to represent enlightenment and an olive branch in her left hand to represent peace on a background of the rising sun and U.S. Capitol building. Her hair and gown are flowing beautifully in the air. The image of Lady Liberty is surrounded by 46 stars which represented 46 states in 1907. There is an inscription “LIBERTY” above the head of the image.
The reverse of the coin features a side view of a flying American eagle on the background of the rising sun. Above the bird are two semi-circular tiers of inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “TWENTY DOLLARS.” Between the Sun and its rays in a semicircle inscription “IN GOD WE TRUST.”
These coins were struck from 1907 till 1933, hence falling under the category of Pre-1933 US Gold Coins.
