The California Gold Rush in 1849 not only made the United States a very wealthy country, but it also helped change the monetary system. At that time, the highest denomination that had been prevailing was $10 Gold Eagle. With plentiful gold, the Government considered introducing a denomination double than $10, and that is how $20 gold coins were issued. Since they were exactly double the denomination of $10, they earned the name Double Eagle.

The first Double Eagle was designed by James B. Longacre, the Liberty Head, and was minted from 1850-1907. In 1907, the Saint Gaudens Double Eagle took over the position.

The Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle coin stemmed from the desire of President Theodore Roosevelt, who felt there was a huge need to revive the American coinage as the coins of that era according to him were hideous. He felt coin was the most visible and palpable representation of a nation. Therefore, Roosevelt asked his dear friend and one of the most popular sculptors of that time Augustus Saint Gaudens to come up with a great design for the new $20 Double Eagle coin. Gaudens came up with a beautiful image of Lady Liberty which instantly got appreciation from the President, who loved the high relief coins of Ancient Greece. The first few coins of the $20 Double Eagle were struck in high relief versions because they were not stackable one above the other which was not good for commerce. About 12,000 high-relief coins were struck before stopping their production. Later on, a lower relief was released which was easy to stack one on the other and was deemed fit for commerce.

The obverse side of the coin features a full-length image of Lady Liberty with her hair and robe flowing beautifully in the air while she is striding forward holding a lit torch in her right hand which represents enlightenment and an olive branch in her left hand which represents peace. Above the head of the Liberty is the inscribed word “LIBERTY” and the image is surrounded by 46 stars that honor the 46 states at that time.

The reverse of the coin features a side view of a flying American eagle on a background of the rising sun. Above the bird are two semi-circular tiers of inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “TWENTY DOLLARS.” Between the Sun and its rays in a semicircle inscription “IN GOD WE TRUST.”

The Saint Gaudens Double Eagle Gold coins were struck from 1907 to 1933.
