Detailed Information:
To honor Late President Franklin D. Roosevelt, the Roosevelt Dime was issued in 1946 on his 64th Birthday. President Roosevelt had himself been a victim of polio, and he spearheaded the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis campaign to find a cure for polio. Franklin Roosevelt also saw the nation successfully through the Great Depression as well as World War II.
The coin had to be minted for the 64th birthday of the late Franklin Roosevelt and it was released on January 30, 1946. Since there was only a limited time available before the release of the coin, the Mint chose its employee Chief Engraver, John R. Sinnock to design the coin. He designed a left-facing bust portrait of the president on the obverse, and on the reverse, the coin features an olive branch, a torch, and an oak branch which signifies peace, liberty, and strength respectively.
The coins were minted at the Philadelphia Mint, Denver Mint, and San Francisco Mint. From 1946-1964, these coins were made of 90% silver and 10% copper. From 1965 onward they are made of 91.67% copper and 8.33% nickel.
Since more and more of the silver coins were hoarded by the public, the silver dimes almost disappeared from circulation. Since these coins were minted in millions, there are not many rare dates, and a set can be completed easily in mint state. There have been very few minor changes in the design since its inception.
Owning these coins in bulk is the smartest investment option due to its 90% silver content. Also since this is the only dime coin to feature a president’s image, this is also historically significant.
