1999 W 1/4 oz $10 Gold American Eagle Unfinished PF Dies PCGS MS 69

This 1999 W 1/4 oz $10 Gold American Eagle Unfinished PF Dies PCGS MS 69 is a highly unique US Mint Gold Eagle. The coin is graded a near-perfect PF 69 by PCGS and was made from unfinished Proof Dies. Although the exact mintage of coins with this error is unclear, the US Mint believes about only 6,000 of these coins exist. This rare 1999 W 1/4 oz $10 Gold American Eagle Unfinished PF Dies PCGS MS 69 is scarce and will surely make a notable piece for your collection!

Y2K made for an incredibly chaotic 1999 for everyone, including the US Mint. Because of fears over the Y2K event, there was a high demand for gold, and the US Mint ramped up production for their Gold Eagles Coins. As a result, an error was overlooked until it was too late. Unpolished proof dies were used at the West Point Mint instead of polished proof dies. The mistake was discovered in 2000, after the fact that many of the coins were already sold to Asian jewelry fabricators. This is why the mintage is unconfirmed for this mint error Gold Eagle coin. However, the US Mint did say they retire their dies after about 6,000 coins, leading to the conclusion that a maximum of 6,000 of these coins could exist today. Very few have surfaced in comparison to the assumed total amount of mint error Gold Eagle coins.

The obverse features the Augustus Saint-Gaudens design wherein Lady Liberty holds a flaming torch and olive branch as she walks towards the viewer. Rays of sunlight emanate from behind her, lighting up a distant US Capitol building.

The reverse displays Miley Busiek’s illustration of a family of eagles. One parent eagle descends towards the nest where its mate and hatchling await. It holds an olive branch in its talons as it returns to the nest.
