1999 W 1/4 oz $10 Gold American Eagle Coin NGC MS 69 (W Mint Mark)

Please note, label and holder design may vary.

This 1999 W 1/4 oz $10 Gold American Eagle NGC MS 69 is an excellent choice for any precious metals portfolio. The coin is graded a near-perfect Mint State 69 by NGC.

This 1999 W 1/4 Gold Eagle has a mysterious story. Upon first glance, one might assume it is a burnished issue, as those are the only mint state Eagles to carry mintmarks. However, since the burnished program began in 2006, only two other explanations are possible. The first is that unfinished proof dies (instead of the regular bullion dies without a mintmark) were accidentally shipped to West Point, and no one caught the mistake until many Eagles were already produced and shipped out. The other explanation is that overwhelming demand for bullion due to fears over Y2K put a strain on the mint's operations, and a pair of unfinished proof dies were put into use to help keep up the Mint's production output. In one case, the dies were used by accident. In the other case, they were used on purpose. Either way, the Mint has never offered an official explanation, and the origins of this rare piece of bullion continue to be shrouded in mystery.

The obverse features Lady Liberty holding a flaming torch and olive branch along with the year of mintage.

The reverse displays the family of eagles' design along with the denomination and weight.
