In commemoration of the 10th anniversary of Emperor Akihito's enthronement, this legal tender 10,000 Yen gold proof coin has been struck by the Mint Bureau, Ministry of Finance, Japan. It comes in a plastic holder and special box, with a certificate of authenticity in Japanese and English.
On the obverse is a Phoenix, Paulownia and White Birch.The reverse features a Chrysanthemum Crest, Mandarin Orange and Cherry.
Akihito is the current emperor of Japan, and ascended to the throne in 1990 after the death of Emperor Hirohito. Throughout his reign he has worked hard to try and bring the Imperial Family closer to the nation, and has governed the nation through events such as the 2011 Tsunami.
