In 1492, Christopher Columbus set sail from Spain with three small ships named the Niña, the Pinta, and the Santa María, which was the largest of the trio. Columbus planned on seeking passage to the East Indies; however, he mistakenly ended up in what is now Central America. He never officially renounced his belief that he had reached the East Indies, and notably called the native inhabitants of the land “Indios”, which was Spanish for “Indians”. In modern times, that name is considered incorrect and inaccurate, and indigenous people are instead referred to as "Native Americans" or "Natives". Following his initial journey, Columbus set sail three more times to various locations across the globe. He passed away on May 20, 1506, at the age of 54.

The obverse features Christopher Columbus standing proudly in front of a globe while holding a flag. His three ships the Niña, the Pinta, and Santa María float on a body of water behind him. Inscriptions: “LIBERTY”, “IN GOD WE TRUST”, “COLUMBUS QUINCENTENARY” along with the year of mintage and P mint mark.

The reverse displays the ship “Santa Maria” alongside the Discovery space shuttle, showing how much our ability to explore new horizons has improved. Inscriptions: “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”, “ONE DOLLAR”, “E PLURIBUS UNUM”, “USA”, and the years “1492-1992”.
