1990 1/2 oz Chinese Proof Platinum Panda 50 Yuan NGC PF 69 UCAM
This rare and unique 1990 1/2 oz Chinese Proof Platinum Panda is composed of .9995 pure platinum and graded by NGC as nearly perfect Proof 69 Ultra Cameo.
The 1990 50 Yuan 1/2 oz. Platinum Panda is the largest coin of the three fractional-sized Panda coins released in that year. It is the only 1/2 oz proof platinum Panda issued by Chinese Mint. Each fractional coin of this year issue has its own unique design, unlike their gold versions.
The 1990 Panda coins keep the traditional reverse design that has been the hallmark of this great series, featuring the Temple of Heaven in Beijing, the title of the People's Republic of China, and the year of issuance below (1990). The obverse design features a Panda sitting on a rock eating bamboo leaves, with the denomination (50 Yuan) below and the right side has the purity (.9995) and weight (1/2 oz. Pt).
These Pandas were originally offered either as single coins or as part of sets. One set contained a platinum, silver and gold Panda. The best-known grouping is a three-coin set enclosed in a red Capitol Plastics holder. The total mintage is 3,500 but some of these were melted along with other Chinese platinum coins during the 1990’s so the total population is under 2,500.
