1987-S 1 oz China Proof Platinum Panda 100 Yuan NGC PF 68 UCAM - Low Mintage!
This rare, unique and beautifully designed 1987 platinum 100 Yuan Panda is composed of 1 oz. of .9995 pure platinum, graded by NGC as a Proof 68 Ultra Cameo, a sharp, attractive, nearly perfect strike and with few to no blemishes. This is a great piece for coin or bullion collectors. The Platinum Panda is a series of platinum coins of China produced from 1987 to 2005. The series is named after the image of the panda printed on the reverse of each coin. These coins feature the same panda designs as their gold counterparts for the year in which they were released. The very first platinum panda coin was released in the year 1987. These platinum coins are particularly valuable to collectors because so few were produced compared to those of other metals.
The design is by master artist Chen Jian, who also was the artist for the original 1982 Pandas. The 1987 Panda coins keep the traditional obverse featuring a depiction of The Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests at the famed Temple of Heaven complex in Beijing, the title of the People's Republic of China, and the year of issuance (1987). The Temple of Heaven, founded in the first half of the 15th century, is a complex of fine cult buildings set in gardens and surrounded by historic pine woods. Its layout and individual buildings symbolize the relationship between earth and heaven – the human world and God's world – and also the special role played by the emperors within that relationship. The reverse design features a Panda gently sipping water out of a pond with bamboo trees in the background, along with the denomination (100 Yuan), purity (.9995) of the coin, and the mint mark (S). Noteworthy is the illusion of water created by using only a few simple lines.
With a mintage of only 2,000 this is clearly a scarce coin but the coin is rarer than the mintage suggests. During the mid-1990’s there were times that the platinum content of this coin overshadowed its numismatic worth. As a result many platinum Pandas were melted and resold as bars.
Like all of our other platinum coins, this one is guaranteed to be 100% authentic. Item will be wrapped and packaged safe for delivery.
