This beautifully designed 1987 proof gold 1000 Yuan Panda is composed of 12 oz. of .999 pure gold, graded by NGC as a Proof 68 Ultra Cameo: a coin that has a sharp strike with full original luster, with no more than four, lightly-scattered, contact marks or flaws. This is a great piece for coin or bullion collectors. The highly collectible Gold Panda series of coins began in 1982. Each size in the Gold Panda collection is .999 pure Gold. The traditional reverse design depicts the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests in the Temple of Heaven in Beijing and the year. The obverse features a seated Panda with cub, as well as the denomination and gold weight.

The 1987 12 oz. gold 1000 Yuan Panda is the second gold Panda coin minted in this size. It was the second 12 oz. gold Panda released after the 1984 1000 Yuan gold coin. It was quite popular when originally issued and had a relatively high reported mintage of 4,000. A later report pegged the actual number minted at about 2,500. The 12 oz. gold Panda series has fewer date gaps than the 5 oz. series and has proved more popular with collectors. As well, less than a handful have been certified!
