Early commemorative coins were produced from 1892 until 1954 to honor specific people, events, and places as well as to fundraise for future US monuments. The first modern commemorative coin is considered to be the Washington Half Dollar, issued in 1982. Following the success of this release, Congress passed legislation to produce a trio of coins minted during 1983 and 1984 to support the US Olympic Committee. This 1984 D Silver Dollar was one of two silver coins that were struck in the trio. The third coin was a $10 Gold Eagle struck in 1983.

The obverse, designed by Robert Graham, features the Olympic Gateway, which was the entrance of the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. This location hosted the opening and closing ceremonies for the Games. The Denver “D” mintmark is inscribed along one of the pathways on the left. Other inscriptions include: “LIBERTY”, “IN GOD WE TRUST”, “LOS ANGELES”, “XXIII OLYMPIAD” along with the year of mintage.

The reverse, also designed by Graham, displays a bald eagle similar to the one shown on the Peace Dollar. The eagle holds an olive branch in its talon as it perches on a rocky crag. Inscriptions: “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”, “ONE DOLLAR”, and “E PLURIBUS UNUM”.
