Federal Currency Notes were printed by the nation's central bank, comprised of twelve regional Reserve Banks and the Board of Governors in Washington, D.C. The Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, established in 1914, was one of those 12 banks and produced a large quantity of the $500 Currency Notes. Although these Currency Notes are still considered legal tender, once they are deposited into the bank they would be returned to the Federal Reserve.
