The design of this 1917 One Dollar Bill Legal Tender is the last $1 to contain this design. Several signature combinations can be found on banknotes like this, but the signatures on this note contain former US Treasurer Frank White and Register of the Treasury Speelman. Additionally, a colorful red seal appears on the front beside the portrait of George Washington. This portrait is known as the Athenaeum Portrait, and it was famously unfinished by the artist, Gilbert Stuart, in 1796. On the left side of the portrait is the Vignette of Christopher Columbus Discovering Land in the left corner. This image was inspired by a painting by Charles Schussele, which was engraved by Joseph P. Ourdan.

On the obverse, you will see the famous portrait of George Washington that continues to be used on $1 US dollar bills today. The left side bears the Vignette of Christopher Columbus Discovering Land and a red US seal. Serial numbers are printed in red ink, and signatures appear beneath the portrait on either side.

The reverse of the $1 United States Note is only colored in green. The design on this side is what gives the $1 United States Note the name “saw-horse”. “UNITED STATES” “OF AMERICA” appears in an X-shape, or saw-horse, on the reverse. An ornate lathework background also bears the “US” and “OF A” on the top and bottom of the X-shape. The face value is repeated in each of the four corners in print and as a fancy number “1”. A note about the legal tender and penalty of counterfeiting also appears on this side.
